I've always like the 12 Gauge.

You forgot the 28 guage lol! I actually do have one of those but its not a gun designated for home defense. Home defense shotgun for me is the mossberg 12 guage and also have a 20 guage that is my wifes go to gun in a emergency.

Wowie shooting an 8 gauge in middle of night would sure not be a fun thing. Matter of fact I really have no desires to shoot an 8 gauge ever.

I shot an 8 gauge a couple of times.
those shotguns are built for folks that are big enough to handle that sort of recoil...the same sort of folks that would want to duel you with 10 pound sledge hammers instead of pistols.
I WILL say though, that they are effective.
they have to be...its a shoulder mounted howitzer.

12 if everyone can handle it, 20 if they can't. Though really any gauge you can get buckshot and slugs for, which eliminates the 28.

with alternating rounds of 9 and 12 00 pellets.
