I have an automatic. why? because if I have to repel boarders then I don't want to give them that authoritative clacking sound as a heads up that they're about to slip their mortal coil.
the only thing I want them to hear is the first half of a really loud noise.
I have a winchester model 50 that fits the bill rather nicely.

I will explain more later. Currently I am writing a paper on the Combat Shotgun. I'll post it when I complete it if anyone's interested.

Re: What kind of shotgun do you like for HD?

I like the semi auto over the pump simply because it can be fired with one hand and in most circumstances, a pump gun cannot. Any shotgun is good so long as it isn't a single shot. The bigger the magazine capicity, the better. Barrel length, pistol grip, light attachment, light, bayonet, sling, and shot shell holders are just a bunch of extra crap that can get in the way, add wieght and get caught on something. A pump or semi auto with a five round capacity should do for almost any home defense except in situations like the one in Waco. So, a wood stocked, blued or parkerized sporting shotgun will work just as good as a more expensive super whiz bang "tactical" or "HD" shotgun. The thing more important than the shotgun, is the will to use it and the ability to use it. Anyone large enough to pick it up and shoot it that lives in your house should know how to shoot it, where it is and in what situations to shoot. At ranges in your house, garage or yard, the ammo is of little importance, bird shot or buck shot will all do the job for home defense.....There is a big difference in home defense and having a shotgun that looks like home defense. Home defense is a state of mind, not a tricked out shotgun and "special" ammunition.

I guess if I had my preferance it would be the loaded one.

I would have to agree with the previous post... a loaded shotgun would be the best one.

However consider this; Your shotgun doesn't make a very good Carry Weapon. I have a pistol in my pocket at all times... whereas my shotgun sits in a corner. My carry pistol goes to the store, gas station, mall, and everywhere I go. My shotgun sits there in the corner. Going potty, mowing the yard, or changing the oil in the truck, my pistol is right here... while the shotgun is sittng there... At home a sleep, my .357 Magnum is an arm's reach away. You get the idea.

If the situation allows, you can't beat a shotgun! But more often than not, your pistol will be more readily available.
