Coach guns - what do you think?
I want to get a coach gun. They've got that Old West romantic quality to them and I'm a big sucker for that. I don't know what I'd really get one for, probably just the joy of shooting it and perhaps as my backup HD gun. I know I want a 12 gauge, and I want one with external hammers (because they just look cool), but I'm not well-versed on who makes good ones. I've heard good things about Stoeger, but nothing about any other manufacturer and I have heard that if you get a bad double-barrel, one barrel shoots North and East while the other shoots South and West. Do you good folks have any thoughts or opinions?

I like the doubles trigger exposed hammers, I had a cool custom coach that was engraved ,which I sold . not very practical but a conversation piece. Here is the only other one I know of besides Stoeger,,,http://www.iacshotguns.com/99w.html

I had a Rossi that I bought back in 68 and it was a beautiful little shot gun as the
fit and finish was 99% when I sold it last year and i'am sorry I did.
It's a shame Rossi dont make them any more.

This is the best "coach gun" I've seen in a while.

That CZ coach gun would be OK for shooting dove with 1 1/8 oz of No.8 or 9 shot. Fun too! Or, perhaps phesant with 1 1/4 oz of 7 1/2 shot for planted birds and No 6 for wild birds.

I think they're the best thing going for the average person...I want one big time.
I am writing an extensive paper on the shotgun for combat and therefore I don't want to say more at this time.

Yeah but those old Rossi's weren't that expensive either...fairly decent guns if I recall right.

I've been looking at them.308nato wrote:I haven't heard anything bad about them .
Only thing I read was that the safety automatically sets every time you close the action!!!
(Lawyers are taking over the country.)
The good news: you can file a little off some little connecting rod and the manual safety still works, but the auto safety is defeated. I saw it posted in another forum.
I kind of like the Stoeger Supreme in 12-gauge, nickle plated (they do not make stainless) and with removable chokes.
They run around $400.
ETA: And they don't have external hammers.
And make sure you don't get the single trigger model if you are looking for a double trigger coach gun. They sell both as I recall.

Re: Coach guns - what do you think?
my brother had a stoeger, I really liked that shotgun and wish now that I would have bought it. it was hammerless, shot beautifully, was short and very handy;well made and it was also light enough to carry without fatigue but heavy enough to belt someone with if you didn't want to kill em.
hey Jack, My sister lives in Goose creek! :-) also my brother (the one with the stoeger) is a fine fella with quite a bit of firearm knowledge.
you can email him at oldradartech@gmail.com

Arg, I spoke to my brother about a REALLY nice one that he owns..he said it's a "liberty II" and was made in turkey..and is no longer made. beautiful shotgun though. good thought into the way it was designed and built too.
