Re: Coach guns - what do you think?
I have an old Ranger (Stevens 311, I believe) that someone else cut down to 18.8 inches. I measured it about a hundred times to be sure before I bought it. It was made sometime in the 30's I believe and it's safety automatically resets every time the action is closed. I think that was and is a pretty common feature.

Not sure why they would make side by sides set the safety on every time you close the action.
To me, that's like making a pump set the safety on every time you pump the action.
Now, I'm not opposed to safeties. I just like to be in control of them.

I agree, NRA guy.

That is true but with practice, you can get real proficient at sweeping the safety off as you re-shoulder the gun.

Safetys that set upon opening are pretty common, and the idea is good or bad depending on how you look at it.
Anyone thats ever shot trap or skeet hates them, as its a lost bird if shooting registered events.
I have always disconnected or modified them on any of my O U or S S. even the hunting guns.
The best course of mind, is too train oneself to not rely on the safety. While hunting or shooting, one eye should be on the muzzle, the other on the dog, or the dekes what ever the case might be.
To ever get into the assumption that "the safety is on since its automatic" is a rocky road to travel down.
Its as easy to walk with the gun broken open for that matter, or its as easy to switch the safety on, as it is off, after closing the gun.
As far as the idea of a serious use shotgun, IMHO, there are a lot better choices out there than a cut off S S or O U.
Granted They are short and handy, but if katy bars the door, a couple of extra shots in a pump gun might come in use.
And few of the vintage ones have ejectors, which slows down a reload by some seconds when it might be needed.
