It pays to get older sometimes...
I acquired a new goodie for my collection today. My sweetie took me to the gun shop today and bought me a new rifle that i have been drooling over for my birthday. This pretty well covers the bases for me now. I have a 30-06 with scope for the long shots, and i have an AR for the short range stuff, now she filled in the middle with a new Springfield m1a in 308 caliber.

Sorry i forgot the photo limits of the forum... and yes that is a stainless match grade barrel you
are seeing there.

There are perhaps a few serious use rifles out there, that are equal to this classic, but I am hard pressed to be convinced there are any better ones.
Shoot it against your 06, even at the longest range, I suspect you will see little difference in performance. And you will have to load the 06 to the max for any appreciable energy difference.
Its a good one in all aspects.

Yep, i didn't expect much difference between the 08 and the 06 using basically the same ammo. Mostly i will be using 150gr bullets in both guns at close to same amount of powder. The 06 is set up with a good scope so i figure to use it mostly for over 150 yard shooting, while the 08 will be kept stock with the military peep sight which will do right fine for me from the 75 to 150 yard mark. The AR with a halo sight will do very nicely for the closer 10 yard to 100 yard stuff.

Re: It pays to get older sometimes...
Well my order of 308 brass and bullets made it in from Midwayusa this morning so i hot footed it back to the house and started loading some rounds. Couldn't wait to see what the new M1a shoots like. Got out to the river about 1:30pm and there was a 15-18 mph wind blowing but i set the target up where i was shooting into the wind. First picture has a total of 8 rounds. The first 4 were as the rifle came out of the box. Not to shabby i would say, i started playing with the elevation knob and the second 4 looked a bit better. I am sighting in at 50 yards so i want about an inch high to be on for 100 yards.

Second picture says 5 shots, but i think it was really 6. Had one flyer, but the 5 shot group looks decent

Last picture has 8 shots. I think i finally got the elevation about right and am learning how to use that peep sight a bit better. My 4 shot J group looks good....

Really a sweet shooting rifle, i'm more than happy with it.

Nice!
now you know it can shoot..find an 800 yard range..that's where it can stretch it's legs out a little. I wish I could find something over 100 yard range!

Re: It pays to get older sometimes...
Well i had a chance to get out and try out some ammo a couple of days ago, some i bought and some that i reloaded. Both performed rather well i would say as they all went bang when they were supposed to and actually stayed in the same general area i was shooting at.
I started out with some purchased ammo, some 147gr FMG nato stuff. Shots 1 and 2 grouped nicely, but was rather high so i dropped the back peep sight some and the next 4 rounds went a bit on the low side, i then raised the peep again and the next 5 rounds all went in the red, a 3" bull. Not to bad for sun in face and a 15 to 20 mph wind.

Next i tried some 150gr FMJ reloads using 42gr IMR3031 powder... This time a 2" bull...

One more time with the 147gr FMJ nato rounds, again with a 2" bull. Moved up to 50 yards this time as the sun was making it real hard for these old eyes to see the bull.

I'm really starting to like this rifle after less than 50 shots...

Re: It pays to get older sometimes...
I guess we can see here, proof that reloaded ammo (when used with the rifle it's fired from the first time) is 3 times more accurate. :)
on top of that, I think you are getting more comfortable with it and learning the ins and outs of the rifle.
it's really nice to watch!
