Cetme C Spanish battle rifle

Post by James on Mon 18 Jan - 16:48

Run across an interesting rifle today that i am seriously considering purchasing. From what i have been able to find out so far it seems to be a Cetme C Spanish battle rifle made by Century Arms. Seems to be an offshoot of a WWII German rifle that didn't get into production in time for the war, but the plans made it to Spain where it was developed. This particular one has an 18 inch barrel and is in 308 cal with 20 round magazines. It appears that the flash hider is removable and a muzzle brake could be added if wanted.

The rifle is kind of AR style with solid stock. The rear sights revolve to get an open sight, and 2 or 3 peep sights set for 100-200-300m. The fellow said he ran a box (20) through it and it seemed to be quite accurate.

Does anyone know of this rifle and Century Arms? Any pros or cons?

Good rifles for sure! the rifle you speak of is the precurser to the G3/hk. I bought one several years ago new for 299.00 but sold it sometime later because i needed money. It did seem to require a "break in" period when the rifle was first new as far as the action was concerned. One does not want to "ride" the bolt down to chamber a round....rifle is designed to pull back the bolt and let it slam. I got a few FTF and FTF within the first couple hundred rounds but after that the rifle ate anything you put into it. Also, if you buy it make sure you try a particular mag out before you buy several of them. Seems i read somewhere the mags can be finicky due to all the variants of the cetme that is out there.Accuracy was good also by battle rifle standards. Word of caution, the rifle is VERY loud....ear protection is a must.

Thanks Dan, that is about what i have been able to find out about it from reading on a few other forums. People seem to like it and say it's quite dependable, but it is always good to hear from someone you know about em. I like some of the features is has over the AR, for example being able to drop the mag with a finger on the right side instead of left, and i really like the charging handle on the left side instead of on the back end. Would be able to rack a round in simply with the left hand while the rifle is still against my shoulder...

The cetme is actually a precurser to the HK rifles.
Originally, Hk founders went to belgium and asked them if they could obtain a license to copy the FN/FAL. Belgium told them "...you guys occupied our country not that long ago...go pound sand".
so HK basically took a design of a FAL, used design ideas that they liked and built the cetme.
They're ok rifles if you like them. The FAL is 11lbs, I believe the cetme is a bit lighter.
BE WARNED: about a year ago, quite a few Cetme's came on the market but they were pretty much worn out pieces of junk.
if you're thinking of buying this rifle, make the guy gauge the throat and bore in front of you before you buy it.

The weight is what keeps me from buyiny a clone, I think I would buy a lighter rifle.

The fluted chamber chews up brass and it is a royal pain to clean it and that roller locking bolt and breach area. Personally I think you would be much happier with an AR10 variant or M14 type rifle.

heh..I never much liked HK's either, truth to tell. the bolt doesn't lock open when you run out of ammo so unless you count your rounds (a good practice anyway in cqb situations but yet another thing you have to keep track of.) you won't know if your magazine is dry. Then again, I never was an "operator", didn't even work for the phone company.
I was a grunt.

I always considered a Cetme, simply another version of an FN FAL, which AFAIK, was and is one heck of a battle rifle, but if they are shot to heck, doesnt matter who made them, they are worn out.

there were argentine made versions some years back, or perhaps thats the Cetme?

And yeah, I have heard of magazine interchangeability issues too, but cant swear, something about some of them being built to metric specs as I recall, depending on who made them

actually the FN/FAL is one of the most widely copied and most popular battle rifles.
the English and the Aussies called it the L1A2, the spanish have the cetme version, the swiss called it the STG-58 and the Belgians called it the FN/FAL.
it was also made in argentina as well as several other countries.
it comes in both metric and standard measurements. It has an adjustable gas plug so you can control the recoil on the rifle and comes with an integral bipod that folds into and becomes part of the handguards. The only drawback is that the weapon weighs 11 pounds.
Springfield armory even copied it.
they're good rifles. very accurate. if they have steel handguards you may want to change them out for ceramic or plastic ones...those steel handguards get pretty danged hot when you shoot it.
I had a Metric Imbel Fal kit around here somewhere...just needs a receiver...
For accuracy's sake you don't want to put a sling on the rifle, the swivel is attached to the barrel itself..so it could adversely affect accuracy over the long term. (the good thing is that it comes with a carry handle)

most all of the rifles I've shot are either MOA or sub MOA accuracy.
My wife likes to take mine and shoot shotgun hulls off the target at 150 yards.

funny story, the ONE day that we spent more than an hour at the range, my wife sat down and spent 6 hours shooting this rifle. She got curious though and asked how much it cost per round. (we were shooting lake city arsenal rounds that I had)..I told her that that days' fun ran about 275.00 in just .308 ammo.
after that she made me buy her a 22 rifle and hasn't shot over 100 yards since..dang it.

Well thanks everyone for your comments on the cetme rifles. I have been reading around and find that many people like them quite a bit and some hate em... to be expected no matter what gun it is. However, because of their rough treatment on brass and a couple other things i decided not to get this particular rifle. Had the price been down about $300 i may have gone for it, but not at the $550 he was asking for it.

So, instead i paid a visit to another of my haunts and wound up taking this little beauty home for $300. Darn thing is exceptionally clean and in good shape. Yes that is a bayonet you see folded back into the stock... For those who don't know, it is an SKS in 7.62x39mm cal. It has a small scope that works real good at 100 yards, will post some pics when i get a chance to get out to the range again.

that's a handsome rifle, and perfect for the 100 yard range!
I have every confidence that you made a good deal and I know you'll enjoy that rifle.

I was not aware that the copies had fluted chambers, other than the HK, and AFAIK, they were the ones that basically utilized that type chamber on a large scale.

Learn something everyday, I guess, If I keep my eyes and ears open.
