Cant argue with that at all. Just wish I could find a carry system out there that would suit me for carrying the 1911.

Try the one i use Dan... a Crossbreed IWB with slight forward cant at about 3:30. After you wear it for awhile the leather kind of molds to your body and it is quite comfortable for an 18 hour carry. When i carry it a lot i tend to forget it is even there. Only problem i have is i am built like upside down, all my weight is at the top so a heavy 45 tends to pull my pants down unless i also wear suspenders, with them though it carries great. I use the same holster to carry both my XD's 45's and the Taurus OSS 45 and the Taurus Pt140 40SW as they all have the same style trigger guard and it fits them all. For the Kimber 1911 the trigger guards is more rounded so it needs its own holster. He does good work and will form the holster to fit your particular gun.

I like a cross draw too, they are real handy if spending much time in a vehicle.

Vehicles seem to me the common problem the gives holster use a headache, if on the side, the muzzle tends to dig into the seat in all but the shortest barrels, one the back hip, the grip gets shoved into ones kidney throw in the seatbelt issues, it makes a guy consider a shoulder holster.

Thats one thing about a commander length 1911, I am only about 5' 8, and the muzzle just clears the seat or chair, while a full size 1911 digs into the chair or seat a bit.

If I was ever gonna put a parts gun together,( for CCW) I would love an Officers Model frame, with the 6 shot length grip, and a Commander length slide.

Guys always worry about barrel length, its often the grip length that is the give away in a concealment goal.

That has been my experience Ron, the 5" barrel doesn't bother me at all, but that large grip sticking out will show your carrying about every time if your not careful. That is the main reason i carry my PT140 the majority of the time as it has a short grip and doesn't pooch out there like a flag. But the 1911 if you wear a loose enough shirt or coat carries very well and comfortable. Second reason is if some cop is gonna snag my gun i would rather it be a $235 Taurus than a $1200 Kimber...

The service model XD with a 4" barrel just barely extends beyond the holster and gives no problems that way, but it has a huge handle and can defiantly show up if you are wearing snug cloths.

I dunno, I'm partial to the RIA tactical. It's a good durable, reliable pistol that, if you had to leave it in evidence until you were cleared you wouldn't worry about it as much as a Kimber.

Ya, i been thinking about getting a cheaper 1911 for carry purposes. I love shooting them but would certainly not want one of these redneck bubbas we have for "police officers" around here taking it away from me and having it get lost in the shuffle.

i've been wondering if there's a viable & practical method of concealed carry for a full sized 1911 in a warm weather environment. wearing a thick jacket or sweater in 90 degree weather to better conceal such a big heavy gun will just draw more attention, in addition to being very uncomfortable. even in the middle of spring & summer here in la or in miami, even running around in tshirt & shorts sometimes gets too hot.

Depends on how you are built a lot. For me even an IWB needs at the least a large floppy shirt and best a jacket to cover one. The guy who builds the SmartCarry holster is able to carry a full sized 1911 in it without showing, but i can't though my PT140 disappears quite nicely in one.

Often times, we get ideas of what is possible from the movies, in real life, hiding a full size gun with summer clothes is just not possible. Bianchi of course used to run that advertisement of him having something like 6 weapons, all under suit clothes. Well, that looked good in a picture, but I can promise in real life, walking around, sitting moving etc, he would not have been able to "get away" with that for very long. Or we see Dirty Harry or Magnum PI running around with full size weapons, well again, thats simply the movies.

There IS NO WAY to pack a full size gun, wearing typical summer duds and stay totally concealed. Thats why one see butt bags, which of course stand out like a guy wearing western boots in NYC.

No wait..what was that anectdote...

A Texas ranger was being interviewed by a newspaper man about an arrest that was made and the newsman asked the ranger "why do you carry a .45 pistol"?
the Ranger replied "because they don't make a .46"
