XD locked up!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My xd9sc is locked. Not the usual lock up everyone else was talkin about in other threads. I have a live round still in the chamber (should have known not to shoot it on Fri. 13). Anyway I was shooting reloads & the trigger just clicked, looked down & the slide was stuck back 1/4". After trying to clear the round the slide is back to normal, loaded indicater is up, & according to the cocked indicator the fireing pin is nowhere near cocked.
Any ideas??

Re: XD locked up!!
The only thing I can figure is I didn't clean the small amount of lead from the lip of the caseing. That along with the Lee alox tummble lube to keep it in place, just got a little buildup in the chamber.
To break it loose i held the slide with my weak hand & hit the grip with the palm of my strong hand till it came loose.
Now after a good cleanning she is ready to go.
Have to go & say any time realoading be sure to visually inspect each & every caseing for this especially if useing lead heads!!

So you are saying the GUN did not cause the problem by itself?

Re: XD locked up!!
No sir. When i got the round out of the chamber (BTW had to run a dow down the barrel, the extractor didn't pull it) it did still have a small amount of a lead ring stuck to the mouth of the brass. The chamber also had a little it'self.
I do beleive it was due to my neglect to clean the rounds after seating the bullet. I could be wrong, but I will clean off the rest that I loaded that day & hopefully get to shoot them off sometime Sunday.
I will keep ya posted.

Re: XD locked up!!
My thinking after re-reading your symptoms, slide was 1/4" open, pulling trigger caused striker to fall, but round did not fire, slide was made to go fully forward, but NOT pulled back any beyond that 1/4". Then, pulling trigger failed to fire gun.
If all that description is correct, the striker was not in position to fire after the slide was fully closed. The reason is, when XD slide is pulled back from fully closed, and then released, the last 1/2" or so before fully closed cocks the striker to firing position. What happened to you is one of those flukes that can pop up with that type of handgun mechanism, the biggest drawback being no hammer exposed which can be re-cocked and fired a second time.
I often get lead ring build-up as you describe, especially if the seating die is not kept pretty clean. So, I guess best to inspect every round after it leaves the seater and if lead present (or lube),. scrape it off.
Jacketed bullets of course stop the problem from happening.

Re: XD locked up!!
Put a little more bell on the on the mouth of the case will cure most of that. If using jacketed a guy can get by with not much of a bell, but with lead, shaving and what you describe is common.
And of course the other suggestions are all valid to consider as well.
Then invest in a taper crimp die if you dont have one, its an extra step, but they will make some cranky pistols run like the proverbial swiss watch.

Re: XD locked up!!
The reason it was lead bullets is i'm working on saveing a few bucks & casting my own bullets also. So I have to figure this one out. I'm still in the learning curve of reloading, I will get there.
thanks for the info.
