Handgun Finishes

Post by Luckyforward on Sat 12 Sep - 21:45

I have a Browning Challenger that is looking pretty rough and I want to put a new finish on it rather than reblueing it.

What finishes have you put on your handguns that have worked well? I would like something in a stainless finish.

Thanks!

There are several stainless/nickle appearing finishes available now. One of The most common in years past was commonly called "electroless nickle" which due to the process would not peel like classic nickle finish.

Not that its outdated, but there are several new processes around now that you should research.

I was thinking the Challenger has some alloy parts, but I dont recall. Point being, some finishes will work only on steel.

As suggested, other than some grey appearing spray on processes, I dont know of any stainless finish that can be done at home.

I see Brownells is offering several new processes, one I am tempted to try is called "cera koat" i think it is. I am just not sure I want to spend the money, when I have yet to see its results beforehand.

I know a buddy had one of those spray on types, 'guaranteed" to be great, it looked like a tagger working on a city building wall. And it had been done by a very reputable smith, who did do it over. Not that I was all that impressed after the do over.

Course, I am used to the classic finishes anyway. I can suffer some of the various new finishes, but just barely. lol!
