Pierogi, you have been out of the game awhile. The Allen bradley PLC 5 series is about antiquated now. They were using SLC 500 plc's for a long while. Huge amount of I/O possible. Now, they are pushing the controllogix 5000. What could have been done with a plc that would barely fit inside a 3 foot by 6 foot cabinet, can now be done in a processor that will fit in your desk drawer! Things are progressing almost to fast for me!

The huge I-O ability suggests one could run a major part of a plant, or department maybe, with just one processor. Our thinking was, too much production depending on one processor means huge losses if the doggoned thing takes a big dump.
OTOH, I kind of foresaw whole plants being computerized way back then, gosh, it's so awful long ago! But we had fun!
