depending on who is using the term, more firepower than is socially acceptable. I dont think there is a good definition.

I guess that's a relative term.. In a building of blind people, a guy who can see, with a pocket knife is heavily armed.

a Police officer usually has a pistol on his person, as well as pepper spray, a taser and a baton. In his patrol car it's a sure bet that he's got either a shotgun or an AR type platform. He's usually wearing body armor.
he's "heavily armed".
A civilian citizen, with a pistol carried on his person, is not in my opinion "heavily armed".

As most here realize, the media considers anything more than a BB gun, and a single shot shotgun, an "arsenal", or "weapons cache"

As I noted elsewhere, its a good thing they dont actually comprehend the numbers in private hands.

In Commie-fornia, possessing an air-soft gun is probably considered heavily armed. I saw that report of a guy in New Jersey or somewhere nearby and the media described the weapons he possessed as an "arsenal". I guess that's the medias way of saying too many. They initially called one of these weapons a grenade launcher, although later reports stated it was a flare launcher. His other weapons included handguns and "assualt rifles". Man, I hate that term assualt rifle. Since when can I own (rather afford) a fully automatic rifle? The answer I cannot afford it, therefore I only possess a rifle, only made more evil by its societally demonic, black finish.

I think that most folks are missing the point. It's so easy to say "s/he is heavily armed"...The point they miss is that all of these things are simply tools.
A weapon is born only in the mind. should someone decide to use a tool for an evil purpose then they will find the best tool for the job, be it a garden impliment, a rock, stick or firearm.

How many would say that a police officer is "heavily armed" even though there have been numerous cases of Law enforcement officials abusing their authority and even committing crimes; yet they are rarely stigmatized as "heavily armed".
This is because 99.99% of the police officers out there are public servants and are there to enforce the peace, and ensure that folks adhere to the laws that we, the citizens have put into place.
Why is it that citizens, many who would put themselves in dire danger to help another, are so labeled?
It confounds me when I hear such nomenclatures applied to law abiding citizens, even when folks KNOW that most of the time, a police officer won't be there to help them, should they run afoul of a criminal. Most times, officers show up to pick up the pieces and document what happened for the state.

And, the courts have already declared that stopping crime from happening IS NOT their job. That their job is to catch the perp after the fact. Like the old saying goes "when seconds count the cops are only minutes away"... usually from 5 to 10 minutes...
