New Web site tracks concealed weapons incidents

November 17, 2009
SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE

The Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence says a new Web site shows the the state's ban on carrying concealed handguns in public saves lives and protects law enforcement.

According to a new Violence Policy Center Web site -- www.vpc.org/ccwkillers.htm -- concealed handgun permit holders killed eight law enforcement officers and 77 private citizens (including 10 who killed themselves) between May 2007 and October 2009.

Illinois and Wisconsin are the only states to prohibit the carrying of concealed handguns by private citizens. But both states have been targeted by the gun lobby to repeal their prohibitions.

Illinois gun-violence prevention advocates say the prohibition has saved lives and should be a model for other governors and legislatures.

"Clearly, Illinois law enforcement officials and state residents are much safer by not having a dangerous carrying concealed handgun law," Thom Mannard, executive director of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, said in a statement.

The Web site offers detailed descriptions of the 46 incidents in 18 states. Of these, 10 were murder-suicides involving firearms and eight were mass shootings (three or more victims) that claimed as many as 11 lives at a time. Law enforcement officers were killed in Florida (two), Idaho, Ohio and Pennsylvania (two), all with guns.

I dont know. But for the sake of a discussion lets say that it is all true. I would like to see how many times a weapon is used by a pemit holder in the prevention of a crime whether they shoot the perpetrator or not. I would venture to guess that a weapon is used far more often for good than it is for the bad. I have a used a weapon(did not fire it though) on 2 occasions and feel that both instances prevented something that couldve been bad.

like one of the Founding Fathers said long tim ago......(paraphrasing) "those willing to give a little freedom for security deserve neither."

I would agree. I've had to use a firearm ONE time...and I didn't fire it either.
of course those particular instance won't be factored in to this website. they are unreported many times.
Keep in mind that this is the same state who's state police advocate that a woman throws up on herself to make her less appealing to a rapist, rather than turn his head into a canoe. They also say resisting is a bad idea. LOL! I never believed in a state full of retards so I have to ask anyone from ILL. what do you do, make your genetic high-jumpers go into politics?

lol!
